Four examples of pinbacks issued by Philadelphia High Schools showing comic characters. Characters shown above appear to be Mopsy, Sad Sack, Little Iodine, and possibly Veronica Lodge from Archie Comics. Most of the individual classes from the mid 1930s through the 1970s selected a class mascot, which was different from the official school mascot. In a lot of cases the class chose characters from the realm of comic books, comic strips, or cartoons. However, there are numerous examples of the classes choosing celebrities from the movies, the theater, and later on TV. Trying to document all of these type pinbacks out there; so, if anybody can add any images or provide information about why a specific class chose a specific character, I sure would appreciate them posting a comment. Most of the pinbacks show the name or at least the initials of the school, a month and year, and the number of the graduating class such as the 13 on the Sad Sack pinback above. This tradition seems to be restricted to the Philadelphia and New York areas. In the near future, I will be posting images I need help identifying. Hud Baer
