This is a very nice , what I suppose, a Art Deco brooch with a large saphir. With the marcasites it looks a little bit like a flower.
This brooch has one hallmark which I cannot decote for the moment.
The stone is very clear but how can I I distinguish a sapphire from glass.

Hi, I was searching for something via Google and this popped up for some reason. Not what I was looking for at all, but it is a very beautiful brooch. As for how to tell if your stone is a Sapphire or not, you could do a hardness test. A real sapphire would have a Mohs hardness of 9, as it is a blue Corundum, actually the same thing as a Ruby! I would hazard a guess, though, that this is not a real gem and is actually what looks like cobalt glass to me. If you notice when zooming in, the facets on the gem are soft and rounded, a real sapphire would not do this as it is so hard. Glass is not quite a solid, and not quite a liquid, so it rounds with age. Thats why old windows are wavy and thicker at the bottom.
That, and judging by the size and clarity, that would be worth thousands of dollars were it a true sapphire. I'm a geologist, but of course, take my opinion with a grain of salt. I'm only looking at internet pictures and not the true brooch, its much harder to judge. Again, it is still a very beautiful brooch.

TaywuhsaurusRex, what a happy coincidence that you ended up here. Once again is proven that internet and Google of course can give good additions. A geologist is someone who we need very hard on these sites of antique jewelry now and then.
As in many old jewelry are stones processed and for the owners often a question, as with my brooch, what kind of stone they have.
You can find an answer or suggestion for. I think you are right that the blue stone is glass. But it remains, as you also have said in your comment a nice old piece of jewelry. Thank you very much for your help and I hope you can find on these sites more frequently and I think that there are many fellow collectors with me this has the same opinion.

Guardian what a fantastic help detect the authenticity of sapphires. It's not just for me, a good test method, but also for all other collectors.
And with your help as this is definitely sapphire glass! Once again thank you very much hope even to help you!
