Early British WWII dispatch riders steel helmet. This is a one of a kind, not messed about with, early WWII paratrooper helmet with fibre rim, converted to an early experimental dispatch riders steel helmet. Still in its original paint, and overpainted with white winter cammo whitewash which has since worn off. In effect it is a paratrooper helmet with an early, swapped over dispatch rider liner, before they mass produced dispatch rider steel helmet shells of a similar shape.

Not only did they make fibre rim para helmets or HSAT (helmet, steel, airbourne troops) they also made fibre rim despatch riders helmets HSDR , & HSRAC.
All 3 types of the fibre rims were only produced in 1942. These HSDR are just as hard to find as the fibre rim para helmets.

Why are they so hard to find? Perhaps because there were relatively few paratroopers? Could the fibre rim have been so vulnerable that it was a factor in the rarity of these fibre rim helmets? Thanks!

The fibre rims were only made for a short period in 1942 somewhere around 6 months, they then found out from the US how to deep draw there helmets & then added a metal band around the rim doing away with the fibre band.

Thank you very much, tinlid! It is amazing how much you and petey know about these wonderful old helmets, most of which the rest of us have never seen! : )

Thanks for the love miKKoChristmas11. Yes, I must bow to tinlids more in depth knowledge on all things helmet related, whilst I have a general idea of the history, tinlid appears to have done far more research.
