american: Alice Balch Stone 1876-1927. michaan's has a tiny photo of a signature which looks identical. it's a nice painting - kind of barbizon style.

That is great news thanks. How did you found out her name??

some detective work and some familiarity w/ the genre. i was searching several different long lists of hudson river painters and their cohorts along w/ barbizon painter lists, and i found hers. the only signature i could see was a really small thumbscale, but it looked like a perfect fit - A. Stone - in red paint w/ that very victorian slanted letter style.

I'm getting a job at the Rubbish Dump!!!

i go to the dump whenever i can - and always think if only i worked at the dump, i'd find wonderful treasures all the time - and i'd need about 6 more warehouses to keep it all!

the frame on this painting doesn't do much for me. it looks to be only part of the frame - line the inner, gilded section of a much larger, victorian frame. i'd find a similar one for this painting. i think the painting is really beautiful, by the way.
