      Very nice European (Italian as you pointed out) canvas covered trunk. I believe the wood is most likely birch as this easier to steam and bend. Great looking trunk -- has better quality latches and detail than other similar types. Looks like it has nice brass rivets and slat protectors. Hope this helps..
