Interesting, I have a carving that looks identical to yours with the same carving style of characters. Looking closely at your picture, the wood on my carving resembles that of yours. The dark colour with veins of light tan, and very heavy ( I believe it may be ebony). The carving stands at 12 inches, and seems to be a woman surround with 6 children. I found it in the wreckage of a burnt out building 2 years ago. It was sitting in my store from that time, now I am moving so I brought it home to clean up. I will have to figure out how to post the picture.

Hello Chris,
I just noticed that you posted the photos of your piece, sorry it's been so long.
Your piece is wonderful, I see what you mean, that our pieces are very similar.
There must be a tradition of this type of 'group' carving, I find them quite beautiful,
desperate, and touching.
If I find out any more about this type of carving I'll let you know.
Thanks for being in touch,
Best wishes to you for a happy Spring,
Tony.
