Imperial German Prussian 21st Pionier (Engineer) beer stein of Reservist Rieger, who served from 1901-1903, garrisoned in the city of Mainz. In antiquity Mainz was a Roman fort city which commanded the west bank of the Rhine and formed part of the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire; it was founded as a military post by the Romans in the late 1st century BC. The city is located on the river Rhine across from Wiesbaden, in the western part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main.
The stein is approximately 7 1/4" tall to rim and 11" to the top of the soldiers helmet. The interior bottom has a lithophane of a man ( in uniform), woman and the background looks to be hilly country with church & factory in the distance. The decorative lid has one of the regiment's pionier sitting on a stump with gun up to shoulder. A barrel and shovel is hanging from his backpack. The thumb lift has a shovel and pick ax crossed over an anchor as also portrayed on center front with shield with number 21. On either side are scenes of building a bridge and wharf. The roster of the men are on the far side of each picture. Great color and detail including hand enamel accents to the uniforms and the center picture. There is some darkness to the metal from age. The attachment on the handle is a little loose so there is some wiggle to the setting of the lid. No chips, cracks or repairs.
