This doll is hand painted. The sewing is very well done and even forms her small toes and hands. There is a very hard material inside but the face is not soft fabric. It feels like a paper mache but harder. There is stitching everywhere, the head, the kneck, around the mouth.
This really looks like a one of a kind doll but there is a sewn on label that says F.A.O. Schwartz. F.A.O. Schwartz was around for 140 years and was well known in the doll industry.
There seems to be some kind of printed signature on one of the dolls feet, the other foot says Germany.

Among friends it was soon well known that there was a young mother in Berlin who was making play dolls for her children. In 1910, Käthe Kruse was asked to show her handmade creations in an exhibition of self-made toys in Berlin´s department store Tietz. Her charming dolls were an overwhelming success and Käthe Kruse became famous overnight. The press was full of praise for these loving creatures. The dolls were far from being something completely new, but the way they were made hit a nerve with the public. The dolls represented everything the new mevement of progressive education stood for; the dolls didn´t look like little adults, they looked like children. They were ´t role models for children, but equal friends for the children. Adults loved the dolls for their naiveté and children could identify with them. A simple recipe for worldwide success!
Her first order was made by FAO in 1911
It was a representative of New York´s famous FAO Scharz who ordered the first 150 Käthe Kruse dolls. He had seen them in the exhibition and immediately contacted Käthe Kruse to place his order for FAO Schwarz. Käthe Kruse was still overwhelmed by her success at the exhibition and wasn´t prepared at all for receiving orders! She had made dolls for her children, but she didn´t have a workshop or a factory. Nevertheless, the idea of making these 150 doll appealed to er and she decided to hire a painter for the faces and some seamstresses to help her sew the bodies and clothes. After having worked night and day for some weeks, she was able to ship the dolls on time. These first dolls weren´t perfect, but the few minor problems could be solved easily and a second order for another 500 dolls for FAO soon followed. Käthe Kruse realized that she couldn´t possibly make that amount of dolls in her living room. So, she gave a production license for her dolls to a commercial doll manufacturer, but in the end decided to open her own factory in Bad Kösen. She also took part in some interntional doll exhibitions and won titles in Italy, Germany and Poland

Manikin, a million thanks. I purchased this doll simply because I liked it. I was sure it was valuable but I had no idea it was really that rare and had such a great history. I purchased two other dolls from the same person and I will try to post the pics asap.

Manikin, I was curious after reading the fascinating story of Kathe Kruse what year this doll might be. Do you have any ideas?
Ron this one was a early one 1915-20's She is called Doll One. Has high value even though no original clothes .That may or may not be her slip .
She could be as early as 1910

I forgot to mention to cut that price in about half to be be more true to price . That was for a all original dressed doll in excellent condition and he over priced it to today's market . But you will find video interesting :-)

Thank you vet :-) That was so kind of you to make that comment . Many may pass by a doll like this and have no clue what they just should have bought and think it is just a homemade doll. A very talented lady and each one has hand painted face so none are exactly the same . Keep you eyes open for one :-)
