I have always been fascinated with coats of arms. So when I saw this mug I had to buy it. On the bottom is the following statement, “LAMBERTON CHINA/ MADE FOR / HOTEL LA SALLE/ FURNISHED BY /ALBERT PICK & COMPANY / CHICAGO/ DESIGN PATENTED”
Going through my heraldry books I tried to identify the coats of arms on the cup. The large gray eagle is Imperial German more like the 1871-1889 version than Kaiser Wilhelm II's creation. The center shield has what looks like the Prussian Eagle. The two shields flanking the center are notched like those used by knights for jousting there for indicating (I assume) a knight or someone with the “von” in their name. The shield on the left has an uncrowned rampant lion without a tongue sticking out (important detail) on a blue shield. This could represent Reckheim, Schaumburg’s Hessian branch, Gronsfeld, or Jagerndorf. The shield on the right is the Kingdom of Saxony. Since this is an American made design the details like the lion’s tongue could be in error and the entire accuracy of detail could be subjected to artistic license. With this in mind I am guessing that this coat of arms was created to represent a husband and wife who were from Germany possibly the hotel owners or some one very important to the hotel. If anyone here can shed any light on this please do so.
