Hope I don't burst your bubble, but if they say "Made In China" they are crap. I live in the marine community & "they" don't buy Top-Siders anymore. China destroyed their reputation. ECCO is the brand now. Made in China is like marriage, - ruined many good friendships.
blunder - Sperry still makes the original topsider in Maine - for $300 a pair -- and you wonder why companies moved to lower wage manufacturing areas? Sperry is now owned by Wolverine World Wide since 2009 along with Keds, Stride-Rite and Saucony, & also a sister company to Sebago. In addition, Sperry Topsiders were named the top shoe brand by Footwear News in 2012. I was a quality control inspector for a footwear importer for 23 years and traveled to many different shoe factories in China. Just because an item is made in China does not make it garbage. If you buy the knock-offs in Walmart for $10 a pair, those are the garbage. If you buy the brand names you still receive a quality item. Personally, I think Sydney made a very good choice in style and quality. As far as I know there is only one footwear manufacturer that remains in the U.S. - If you don't buy shoes from a foreign country, we will all be running around barefoot.
i remember having these in high school in a grey canvas:) very nice shoes:)

interesting convo....have you guys heard of Sanuk?
http://www.sanuk.com/
Luckily I live where we can go bare foot year round. I bought Top siders for at least 40 yrs. & considered them top notch. Bought my last pair about 3 yrs ago at Budget Marine and within 1 yr. the leather was coming apart & now aren't even good enough to do yard work. The leather didn't look like it was cured right. I have many yachtie friends & they report the same experience now. "Made in China" is a warning label to me now but of course is on almost everything. Mustang, Hope Maine isn't a Province of China now.
BHock, it is getting interesting. Even my Timberlands are getting down-in-the-heel & was wondering about other brands & quality.
hey blunderbuss2, Sanuks are about the same weight as a sock. They are popular here at the Jersey Shore.
I would go barefoot at the Jersey Shore, but fear of stepping on a hypodermic needle forces me to wear Sanuks.
Yeah Bhock, you mentioned them before. Think I've heard the name & will look them up. Thought the Jersey shore moved west?
Lol, it sure did blunderbuss. I haven't even been there since the storm. My family has a home in Seaside. I feel bad saying this, but I really want to take my metal detector down there now! Yes, but it moved west, no doubt!
Wow! A pair of shoes and I get all of these comments! You all are so nice and I appreciate all of the hard works put in to your research. Thanks for the love!
