Here we go! 1972 I left Barcelona on the Ernesto Anastacia, small freighter, built (1955 sunk by rock of gibralter 24 Apr. 1984.) but takes about 26 passengers to Canary Islands. Cost was $26.00 Wood bunks with cotton curtain, thin mattress and all people in same room. Food good! Took 4-5 days, Stopped at Torredembarra to load, most of day there, went town for lunch. Then to Valencia, all day there loaded Val. oranges and?
Then to first Canary Is. La Palma. Bananas! see photo. The Islands as they get closer to Africa become more like Sahara Desert. Now too touristy, Germans, Eng. etc. Condos, I am happy I traveled when young! THE PHOTO OF VAGABOND JOHN WITH CANE WITH DOLLS HEAD ON TOP! He was a trip! He spoke like well educated English Gentleman or playwright actor type, maybe an author or maybe full of? He said he was in his 80's, (look at right arm! he is a tough old goat!) He said he just disappeared when he was a younger man, he said he was famous, been many places, people looked for him but gave up after few years! This is why I like to travel! He had some great stories! Maybe he will see this! haha he would only be 114+ maybe, but he is tough! thanks for looking! Don
One night on ship about 10 I cut a box open and took an orange, a Spanish crew yelled at me! "Give that to me!" so I did and he said "Now get one for yourself!" He spoke good English and we talked and ate about 1/2 box of oranges until maybe 2 in the morning!
actually I'm 116 & doing well. Just married another 18 yr old. LOL

I do some traveling this way & it can be fun. I call it, "going thru life steerage class".

Roy, I am giving it 2 wks to recover from Bob's visit (Bob are you listening?). Mon, me r'ass never drink no mint julip & no see one yet. Tak me pleasure wit Corona & se wher she tak me. Reminds me, time to go out & do a study of St. Maarten wild life after dark!
Tora, ever spent any time in Central America. I've sailed up the Rio Dolce(now known as the Rio Douche because of me) but always wanted to go up the Amazon & Rio Negro. Is it really true that you can drink the water from the sea 100 km off the mouth of the Amazon?
Yes I entered Guatemala 2 times from Belize, "You better Belize it" Been Guat. 4 or five times as I was an overland traveler, also Honduras, and island of Utila, where they speak pirate English and bar was called Bucket of Blood! been Nicaragua and Costa Rica many times.
Tora, covered most of those places! Flying into Guat. from Belize & only had an expired passport that had "CANCELLED" stamped on the 1st page. Acted like i couldn't understand Spanish until the immigration officer was getting upset. He kept pointing at the red stamped "CANCELLED" & I had a brain-storm. "Si, yo comprende. Consul, - U.S. Embassy". He then stamped my passport & I almost choked trying not to laugh as I walked out. That's just the tip of that story. That's back in 84 while coming from scenic Tagulcegapa, Honduras ( the tourist/mercenary mecca of Central America). & miles from the action. 3 way revolt when I reached Guat. where I didn't know which army held my neighbourhood each morning. I can just feel that you have "been there" to & like me, wouldn't trade it for anything. I feel a bond here. Nobody can ever understand us & I won't ask which side you were on & ask the same. Been crazy & great hasn't it? Think we have to talk on a side-band.
All my trips were in the 80's. It was a great experience with excitement!
Toracat, mine started in 73 & still wondering why I'm still alive & only shot once. Don't go there, it hurts. Were you in Guat., Salvadore, Nic. & Honda in the mid 80's? We may have passed on a jungle trail. Don't ask which side I was on unless you tell me which side you preferred me to be on! Strange times. I will tell you now that I HATE MONKEYS! Those Howlers drove me crazy! When those bloody things howl all nite, no wonder the people go crazy there. Go side-band.
