These large artillery mugs or steins seem to have been popular departure or farewell gifts to officers during the VN War. I encounter them on a regular basis.
This particular example is made from a 1969 dated 105mm artillery shell casing. The casing has been worked into a mug or stein shape with a large brass handle.
The side is engraved with " LT C. A. Russell, IV Corps, POLWAR Advisor, Viet Nam, 1970- 71".
See my other items for numerous other trench art items from the Spanish American War through the modern era.
