These are a pair of Japanese Bronze Vases, about 13 inches high and quite heavy.

The problem with having a relative as an antiques dealer is that you say you like a piece of stock that has been hanging around a bit and is quite heavy, they will try to off load it on you. When visiting the in-laws yesterday my wife made the mistake of saying she liked these vases, and it seems now they are ours. If anyone can tell me any more about them other than they are Japanese, bronze and vases, I would very much appreciate it. If any one can actually read the inscription on the bottom I would be amazed.

If anyone can work out how these categories work I would be even more amazed. No oriental art section with sub-categories; No.

I wouldn't be complaining, they're probably worth a fair bit of money

Be careful there's a lot of fakes out there, best to do some searching on it, as well as the marks if any. It might be very old or a commonly made piece 1920's -

What's suspect is the patina, it looks fairly uniform.

Stillwater, the thing you should know first is, my father-in-law didn't give them to us, he made us pay cost for them. Seeing as they had been sitting in his stock since 2002, I am a little surprised we didn't get a discount, but then it wasn't me doing the negotiations for them. If they turn out to be fakes, I know where to get my money back.
