Some big-shot dealer was walking around with it for half and hour, and put it back! I was so happy. I've never understood how these artists could sit around and paint these things. It must be the most tedious form of art in the world

I think you're right Bratjdd, Shuzan was high on my list of possibilities for this one, its about as close a match to the top character as I've been able to find

I realize this was posted a few months ago, but I just keep coming back to see it over and over!!! Really fantastic!

Thanks BHock and Bratjdd, I'm glad to know that other people like this stuff too, the amount of man-hours they used to put into these pieces is mind-boggling isn't it? That must have taken several days of uninterrupted work to paint all those butterflies..

Anyway, I hope the picking gods are smiling on you, find something great to show us!

Hi Stillwater....I still think this is my favorite all time CW post. Sorry to keep on doing this, but I cannot get enough of this one!!!!!! It really is mind-boggling
    14. Stillwater Stillwater, 10 years ago
Wow, really! Your favorite post? It didn't get much attention when I first posted it, which surprised me since its such a great piece, so I'm glad that someone else treasures it as much as I do. You should see it in person, its even more amazing! It is almost surreal how small those butterflies are, it must have have many, many man-hours

Its one of the few pieces I've kept in my safe since its sooooo cool

Do you like Japanese and Chinese antiques BHock? Its a TOUGH thing for a Westerner to get into, but once you do, its really fun and it can pay off!

Yes Stillwater...I really do. I am learning, but somewhat slowly. I did purchase a book, I will have to find the authors name.....it hasn't resurfaced since we moved at the end of the Spring. Do you have any suggestions for a newbie? Thanks Stillwater...again thanks for these great postings. Later!

It's a Satsuma mark that I think reads 'Kinkozan'.
The Kinkozan family of potters were active from 1645 until 1927 after which the factory closed. Approximately around 1875 Kinkozan IV's (1824-84) whos real name was Kobayashi Sobei started to export their products, together with the Kyoto manufacturer Taizan VIII. The market was in particular America. Their main production period were approximately between 1875-1927, under the leadership of Kinkozan V (1868-1927).

Hey BHock, I found another piece of Satsuma that you might like to see. Its about 100x better than this one too... And Bratjdd, remember when you sent me that link to a Yabu Meizan piece that I fell in love with? I FOUND ONE!!!!!!!
