Union Pacific Steam Locomotive No. 844
Several years ago, I had the opportunity to see the Union Pacific Steam Locomotive No. 844 while it was on tour.
The Union Pacific Steam Locomotive No. 844 was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific. It was delivered in 1944 and is the only steam locomotive from the Union Pacific fleet which has never been retired. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such renowned trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose & Challenger trains. An extra "4" was added to it's number (No. 8444) in 1962 to distinguish it from a diesel locomotive numbered in the 800 series. It regained it's rightful number (No. 844) in June 1989, after the diesel locomotive was retired.
