Picking-an…

These are some of the oldest records that I have. I really like the way the graphics are etched into the record instead of just being a stick on label. Unfortunately, the jackets that I have are in pretty rough condition and the titles don't match the records that I have, but it's just amazing that they have survived at all.

I have a huge record collection I am getting ready to sell. In the collection, I discovered around 50 of the Diamond disc (Edison). Do you know of any sources that have prices for these> I have checked so mant sites, but only e-bay had a few listed.
    Thanks,
    Sue

I KNOW A GUY THAT HAD ABOUT 500 OF THESE EDISON DISC AND THERE ARE NOT VERY VALUABLE THERE IS ONLY ONE THAT REALLY WORTH A LOT AND IT IS WHERE MR. EDISON IS AT SOME BIG TIME MEETING AND HE GIVES A SPEECH AND THAT IS THE ONE THAT IS WORTH A LOT, ARE ALL THE RECORDS THAT YOU HAVE ARE EDISON OR DO YOU HAVE OTHER 78 RECORDS ,IF YOU HAVE ANY BLUES RECORDS THOSE ARE WORTH A LOT AND IF YOU GOT A ROBERT JOHNSON ,YOU JUST HIT THE LOTTERY 2K TO 10K FOR JUST ABOUT ANY OF HIS 78'S RECORDS ONLY, GOOD LUCK AND YOU MIGHT NEED TO BUY A RECORD BOOK IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF RECORDS. GOOD LUCK LAWAT56

I have to agree, as far as I know there isn't a lot of value in them with the exception of a few special ones. It's kind of amusing, when I started collecting back in the 70's a few of my friends still had 8 tracks in their cars and Goodwill had stacks of 78's that they were practically giving away. Today I walked through Goodwill with my son and they had boxes of cheap 8 tracks but I haven't seen a 78 at Goodwill in a long while.

That is because Goodwill has an auction site now.

It's also because in the 70's people were cleaning out the estates of their grandparents who collected 78's in the thirties. Now they're cleaning out the estates of their grandparents who collected 45's and 8 tracks in the 70's. They'll be coming for my stuff next, I can hear the clock ticking.(lol)

Yes, I read that the Diamond Disc were not very valauable. I need to check to see if I have the speech by Edison that you had mentioned. YES, thousands of old 78's,45's & LP's. I guestimating maybe 10,000 I have been collecting for 40's some years. I do have many blues. I am working on cataloguing now. I believe I have one of Robert Johnsons. When I looked up in a price guide (namy years ago, it wans't worth much. I do have one of Frank Sinatra's that they wouldn't list a price because it was so valuable. I'm really excited about getting thes organised so I can start selling. I'm wondering if I should sell to a private collector, or list on e-bay? I also have a huge variety of labels that I understand are very collectable. I just need to get udpated catalogues/sources to price.
    Thanks- for your feedback!

Franks first commerical recording by Brunswick I see is listed around four grand on the net. You can go to eBay to completed listings for 78rpm and see some of the more valuable 78's

Yes, I gave up on finding 78's at Goodwill. I saw they had an auction site. Can't find much for antiques of any kind. I picked up much of my collection from auctions. Seems like no one wanted the dinosaurs anymore. We had decided to keep buying because they don't eat/ no need to clean up after them..etc. Many of the early catalogues suggested they just take up space, depending on who you read. It has been many years since I looked up prices and many have soared in value. I was totaly surprised by this. Can't wait to rediscover!
Again, thanks everyone for your help!
    Have a wonderful day!
    Sue
