This was found in a relative's old barn when we were cleaning it out. Brought it home and would like to identify what year and brand of car or truck this would have been on. The hood ornament looks like an airplane. Any help in identifying this would be much appreciated.

I contacted an expert for this one, he echoes my thoughts : " Fitted to a specific hood makes me think that it is factory issue, but I do not know the make. Pretty ordinary I would say. "

It would be around 1954-56 in that neighbourhood. It resembles other airplanes in that era that are well known and collected, but more factory issue looking.

Thanks to everyone for your comments helping me try to identify this hood ornament. I know what you mean, there are lots of airplane ornaments out there. A friend sent me a link to a 1941 Mercury ornament that looks very close to the one I have. What are you thoughts?

I like that one luv, there are others though that bear a much closer resemblance to the one that you have. The 3rd book by Jim Colwill shows the main ones. I don't think anyone would argue the point that the best thing about your ornament is that it has the associated fittings mounted to that hood that you showed in the pictures on C.W., that is super, may even see one on ebay that is much closer in style or the same !!~

I at one time did a lot of research on the designer Alex Tremulis who used some airplanes in his designs for cars at some of the companies that he worked for. He even did a flying saucer design in 1951 which bears a close resemblance to the Star Ship enterprise.
