So here I show you two dress clips I have. The white one is made out of galalith. The red one is chrome with an unknown red material. I tested it for bakelite but it didnt pass that test. I believe they are dress clips because they have small teeth so they can cling to thin material
Which material do you think the red one is?
    Thanks a lot

Its probably something called galalith. It was another synthetic plastic used mainly in Europe during the Art Deco period. It was actually made from the protein in cow's milk. It looks just like Bakelite but it doesn't pass Bakelite tests

Do you think so? The white one is galalith for sure and it looks different to the red one... But you could be right.
      Thanks a lot!

Oh, I didn't see that you had galalith in your post.

I've had some Jakob Bengel pieces before, which were all galalith, and it looks just like that, just like Bakelite. Here are a couple of Bengel pieces:

Well like always, you are right!
I forgot all about it, but I have a Bengel necklace myself. And the galalith does look like bakelite.
Thanks a lot for your advice, I bow my head for your wisdom! ;-)

Aww that's sweet of you :) Your welcome!

Don't you just love Bengel's work? Its just CLASSIC Art Deco. I should have kept the pieces I had...

Stillwater, you are the one who always gives me really good information. You solved single handed most of my mysteries here on CW. So thank you very much!
Yes I do love Bengel. I only found one necklace so far and I plan on keeping it forever.
I bought it for 20 euros on a flea market some years ago...I never spend much money on jewelry and sometimes you get lucky. I will post it soon here on CW.

valentino97, thats not an easy question. In my opinion galalith is not more brittle than bakelite. It looks exactly the same and it feels the same. Only when you rub it it doesnt smell like anything, it doesnt make the 'cling' sound bakelite makes and it doesnt pass the simichrome test. I have been fooled many times. Although, sometimes I just know it, like with the white dress clip I posted.

Wow, did I really? Your very welcome!
Jewelry is where my knowledge base is centered, so that's where I can be of most help to people

Stillwater, in fact it was your reindeer moss pendant that got me attached to CW in the first place. You should post more jewelry for us so we can learn.
