I took a chance on this for $25. Its HUGE, 20" high. Its Czech, with "TM" inscribed on the bottom. The bottom rim is very dirty and worn, and there is some old, yellowed newspaper stuck to it, so I think its fairly old. I can't find much on Czech pottery makers, does anyone have any info?

The cord hole is original actually, its got glaze inside. Don't see how it would be practical though, with that flared mouth

Do you have any idea how this was painted? It CAN'T be by hand... Its got to be some technique where they put something on the surface, dried it, so it crackled like mud, and them immersed it in glaze.

This is probably a Ditmar Urbach piece, in the Alien line. Can't be later than late 30's or so, due to WWII. It is a little more unusual with the blue bands around it. A lot of the alien pieces run big, making them nice decorator pieces.
Hey I think you're right Fishiowa, the pieces I found on Google are decorated in that exact same "crackled eggshell" technique. Couldn't find any other manufacturers associated with it. Thanks a lot!! I owe you one
You're very welcome. Always willing to add a little to people's knowledge. I'm not an expert, but have been collecting Czech pottery for quite a few years now. I didn't really pay attention to the note about being a lamp, but after looking at the picture again, I'm pretty sure this was a lamp originally. Hole for the cord is too clean to have been one after market. I have one that was "fixed" to be a lamp and will post a picture.
Yeah it definitely left the factory with those holes in it (glaze dripped inside of them), but I don't believe it left as a lamp. Lots of large vases like this were made and sold with holes to leave the option open, but they were sold as vases. The inside is very dirty, so I'm pretty sure it didn't have a cap on it.
I didn't find ANYTHING by Ditmar Urbach online that was even close to being this large. Its hard to tell from the photos, but it could easily swallow a basketball with room to spare. All of the pieces with this crackled decoration were Alienware, but this is like a "palace urn." I wonder if this was an early experimental piece, since it doesn't have their mark on it, only Made in Czechoslovakia.
What are your thoughts? Are you aware of any other manufacturers that employed this type of decoration?
