I took these photos a few years ago, and just rediscovered them. These were taken at The Harrisburg, PA Station on the ex PRR line. featured is a GG1 engine, which pulled the trains on the electrified route between NYC and Harrisburg. These aren't the best of pictures, partly due to restrictions on visiting the area. But they will give you a good idea of what this engine looks like.

Inside of the station is a little historic display regarding this engine. If your around HBG, it would be worth it to visit this site.

What year was it built & in service?

Hi walksoftly, thanks for the love and for the question. These were built at the Altoona PA PRR shops by the PRR and General Electric.

They ran from NY City to Harrisburg from 1935 til the 70s. Some of the engines were kept running by Amtrak, and commuter lines until 1983. I saw one running for New Jersey Transit in the 80s near Newark, NJ.

This is a wonderful piece of machinery.

I think that the original idea was to electrify the line all the way to Chicago, or maybe Pittsburgh, but it was determined to be too costly.

I love the look of it, it reminds me of some of the cars with the long hoods from that era.

Yes, walksoftly, I agree with you on the design. It looks to me to be the Art-Deco style, popular in the 30s. Especially in transportation, Art-Deco gave a sense of movement, even when the subject was still.

Thanks for your input, it is appreciated!
