I am obviously not a farm boy. I could use some help in identifying these.

I don't think it's farming -- I think they are building the Chicago and Milwaukee Electric Railroad -- see this google books entry about the Republic Construction Company -- http://books.google.com/books?id=vBQpAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA398&lpg=PA398&dq=%22republic+construction+company%22&source=bl&ots=lr50715ydw&sig=0dN-igR_MSau-KMJfyqBcqLKV6A&hl=en&ei=yF4zTLmHH8H98AbIlNzICw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CDcQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=%22republic%20construction%20company%22&f=false

I was going to say they are both steam engines, both are doing earthwork in different manners. Nice photos.

The photo on right is a steam shovel, the photo on the left appears to be a trencher, there appears to be buckets on the conveyor that extends out the back that dumps on a cross conveyor.
