I was going to say they are both steam engines, both are doing earthwork in different manners. Nice photos.

Well I'm not 'the dude abides' but I am the 'pop'..............
The photo on right is a steam shovel, the photo on the left appears to be a trencher, there appears to be buckets on the conveyor that extends out the back that dumps on a cross conveyor.
