Can anyone help with a date for this?? The stone appears to be a really rough cut cairngorm and the design seems to be hand done. It is a family piece. My family are from Auchtermuchty, Fife, Scotland and are recorded in that area to as early as 1650.
JDManzie. Wonderful brooch!!! I feel that if it were silver it would be marked as so. Are there any markings? See mine, it is similar but yours looks older.

That's a rather deep hue for a Cairngorm, I'd say its either heat-treated or a different type of stone. Might just be the photo though
The light balance in the photo is messed up I think, is it pewter or sterling? I can't tell. Very charming piece. The tube-hinge, C-clasp, and the rocker-engraving date it to the mid-to-late 19th century.
I think it is pewter. What is 'rocker engraving?? The stone looks very much like the photo.
They take a flat piece of metal and rock it from side to side. VERY VERY labor intensive, so it wasn't done for very long
It was probably heat-treated if it is a Cairngorm. The hue is very deep
