This is a stunning ..and the pictures do not do this Antique Opal justice. The Opal fires Royal blue-Sharp Green-Red. I have rarely seen an Opal with this much fire! The fire off the Opal can be seen from across a room. I am thinking of taking it out of the setting and making it into a pendant along with an Antique loose Diamond I have...what do you think? This measures 16.5mm x 9mm x 4.5mm high. This is set into solid 18ct rose gold. The back of the Opal is open..and its not a doublet...or enhanced in anyway. The fire of the Opal is across the top and sides too....

I would agree - set it in a pendant - because it has great fire as you said.

JayHow, its definitely Antique! The Opal is for sure Not newer. I took it to the Store and they said it was gem quality Black Opal. I have Ethiopian Opals which I will post to show you the difference. I will reset into a pendant....see what happens next :))))

I think, whatever you choose to do with it is fantastic. A pendent would be great.

my guess is that this is a Lightning Ridge opal - by the color. I'm not an expert, but i've bought and found a few opals in my lifetime and when i was 16, i dug a few at Coober Pedy in South Australia. Australian Opals for the most part are the highest grade opals in the world. Ones i've seen from other places don't even compare to them. This is a beauty!

my uncle collected quite a few and he had this table made w/ a long seam of first grade Lightning Ridge Opal - which was amazing! i'd love to get a photo of it.

I love the pendant idea - but then I am not really a ring person - have many but wear few!

What a fantastic opal, my favorite stone.
I would leave it and wear it when you can. Much easier to admire a ring on your finger than a pendant. The value would be excellent with an 18ct setting, so you would destroy that potential asset as well by modifying it.
But then, I'm a ring person, not a pendant wearer, unless it has a very long chain.
