I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY COLLECTOR FRIENDS, PARTICULARLY WARREN, HOW TO SPOT HARRACH VASELINE. IT'S EASY. UNDER NORMAL LIGHT IT IS OPAQUE LIGHT GREEN OR EVEN WHITISH. WHEN I SAW THIS UNMARKED PIECE WITH AN OWL , I DECIDED TO KILL TWO BIRDS WITH A STONE (NO ANIMAL VIOLENCE INTENDED)

THE DEALER'S PICTURES WERE SO GOOD I ASKED HER FOR THEM WHILE THE VASE ARRIVES. THIS IS HER DESCRIPTION:

ANTIQUE VICTORIAN BLOWN CANARY VASELINE URANIUM GLASS VASE WITH OWL DESIGN. FLUORESCES NICELY UNDER A BLACK LIGHT. GROUND TOP. VERY NICE CONDITION WITH TINY FLEABITES AROUND MOUTH THE VASE MEASURES 5 1/2" HIGH X 3" WIDE

NOTICE THE WORD "VICTORIAN", WHICH DOES NOT MEAN "BRITISH" BUT "NOT ART NOUVEAU".

WELL, DID I GET IT RIGHT?

The shape looks familiar, but I'm not comfortable with the decoration. Maybe a Harrach blank decorated elsewhere?

I thought Harrach blanks were routinely decorated by other companies. Could this be "Atlas"?

Could be, I suppose. You're right that they were decorated elsewhere. I also routinely see Harrach blanks on the market that are completely undecorated, but they are identifiable by their shape, and the glass that they are made of.

Passau has a whole wall of Harrach glass with decoration that isn't what you'd normally associate with them. I asked Deb Truitt what she thought of that, if it was correct. She said of course they did glass that was for all markets, not just the normal fit for kings stuff that we typically associate with them. (paraphrasing of course, it was a year ago and My memory isn't good enough to remember exact words from that long ago) I don't know if that is including the glass that was decorated elsewhere or if they actually had in house decorators that did the faster decorating.

the thing that looks unusual about this to me is the frosted outer layer compared to the actual vaseline appearance on the inner layer. I don't think I've seen that before. It's definitely not typical of Harrach. Normally it's all kind of a uniform custard appearance. here is an example http://www.thegildedcurio.com/images-large/184-f.JPG

I got an 18 inch owl vase last week. I wasn't going to post it but I guess I will in solidarity of owls everywhere. LOL.
