Hi,
I bought this great heavy piece at a local estate.
It looks to me to be silver, but I can't be sure.
Can't seem to open it up!
Name on the porcelain dial is "Lake Erie" and the back is engraved with a steam engine...........
Was this a train conductor's piece??
Can't find anything about the maker.................

The back screws off (counter-clockwise) to expose the movement. If you take a clear picture of it and give us a serial number on the movement (not on the inside of the back cover), we might be able to help you.
The train on the back does not mean it has anything to do with a railroad.

I found a Lake Erie Pocket watch similar that sold at auction for 80.00 here is link
LAKE ERIE POCKET WATCH. The watch has an engraved hunter's case. Inside of case is marked: 14K. Inside of back case is marked: L.E.W. Co.; Heat & Cold; 253176; Jeweled; star and flag symbol. Condition: watch is missing a long hand and a second hand;does not appear to work; some discoloration on outside case.

With Manikin giving a link to a Lake Erie dial marked pocket watch auction, it does not show the movement either, which would really help identify the watch manufacturer. It does however state, "Heat & Cold; 253176; Jeweled; star and flag symbol".
The star and flag symbol makes me lean toward the Hampden Watch Co. as the manufacturer. They used a flag with a letter inside it on some of their movements to designate a model.
NR inside flag = New Railway
SR inside flag = Special Railway
D* (star) and D & anchor inside flag = Dueber
H inside flag = Hampton
Although, by not being able to see the movement and markings this is only a guess. In the Watch Guide under Hampden Watch Co, they do not list "Lake Erie" as a grade or name used. They do list "Lakeside" though.

Crazy busy, but I finally got around to opening the watch (thanks for the tip, I feel so stupid not realizing it turns to open!!).

It's what collectors refer to as a Swiss fake... Before the Swiss took over the watch industry globally, they made "copies" of American watches and sold them cheaper than their American counterparts.
