There were 1500 made & offered around 1983, and this is number 1169 out of 1500.
“The Hostiles” by Dan Smith was originally commissioned as an oil painting along with “The Last Cartridge”, “Outnumbered”, “The Horse Thief” & “Through The Line”. Along with these were “At Close Quarters”, “The Attack”, “At Bay” by G. W. Peters and “Hands Off”, “A Critical Moment”, “With The Wolfhounds” & “The Last Stand” by Frederic Remington. These oil paintings are hanging in the Smith & Wesson Factory.
In 1902-1903 S&W had color lithograph prints made of these 12 paintings and made them available for 10 cents each in a series of advertsements starting in July of 1902.
