nldionne
(249 items)

This was an added item at auction this weekend. Am curious what M. W. of A. means. The name on it is Lizzie Foutz and it is dated 1910. The lettering is in gold. just curious if anyone had any ideas. Thanks! Thanks Mustang!!!!!

Oh Eye we all get it a little backwards sometimes. Now I'm going to be stuck on this little thing for days.
  2. nldionne nldionne, 2 years ago
Yes stuck, I'll be crazy until I find out why Lizzie foutz was given this.

Aren't these old advertising glasses great!? Anyone out there have one "Crozier, Iowa". My sister in law's family home used to be a general store. They gave some of these red glasses away and we're looking around to see more items may have survived. She has a few - so we are happy for that.

Will let you know if I see one.

Read that the modern woodmen opened a TB hospital during outbreak in early 1900's. Wonder if it is same one he went to. Said the sanatorium treated 12,000 people no charge and it was in Colorado I think.
  12. nldionne nldionne, 2 years ago
He might. I'll follow up to see. Thanks guys.
  13. nldionne nldionne, 2 years ago
I sent him a message explaining what's up. Will let you know how it turns out. Let him know it belongs to him if its hus Lizzie, which I have no doubt it is.
  14. nldionne nldionne, 2 years ago
Indeed it is. My sister and I were talking about the same thing. If he is going through all the trouble of tracing his family it would be an important piece for him. I would just throw it in a box.
  15. nldionne nldionne, 2 years ago
Was at auction box lot. Bought a box of stuff for a few dollars that had a wall pocket in it. Rest of stuff is in car to go to Salvation Army tomorrow so it was just a pice they had thrown together with 7 or 8 other pieces. It is all good, the right thing to do!

    UPDATE !!!!

From the link above, scroll down to see the returned item posted here ...

Late last spring, around the time of my son Caleb’s birth (a busy time, and part of the reason for the delay in sharing), I was emailed by Nancy Dionne. She was hunting auctions in Zanesville, Ohio and came across a ruby shot glass with a crystal bottom, inscribed “Lizzie Foutz” and “M.W. of A.” with the date 1910.

The glass was thrown in as an “add-on” to a piece of pottery Nancy wanted. Curious about its origins, though, Nancy and fellow treasure hunters chatting in collectors weekly’s forums searched online and found this blog. M.W. of A, Nancy and company found out, was likely Modern Woodmen of America (one of Sherman Foutz’s many affiliations), and the 1910 event may have been a function at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1910.

Nancy was kind enough to mail the glass to me. Now this relic of my great-great aunt Lizzie Foutz’s mysterious life sits atop a bookshelf on the right side of our fireplace and mantle full of family photographs. Here’s hoping that continued piecing together of our family’s past, and sharing in this space, can lead to even more illuminating connections.

Hard to believe it has been two years since this was posted. Of course it would be a much more interesting story if everyone's comments were still on the post. Looks like I'm talking to myself :)

    Tony defined "M.W. Of A."

This identifies her husband, Sherman, as affiliated with Modern Woodsmen

Wow ... I remember thinking ... was there other item's at that auction that belonged to Lizzie ??
  49. nldionne nldionne, 2 months ago
Me too. This turned out to be a special piece to be in a box lot. Just wanted the wall pocket. I'm glad I didn't throw it in the Salvation Army box with all of the other stuff. Kind of cool to contribute to their family history. Wish Tony knew!
