his mechanical valentine, which reads "Valentine Greetings, Fate Cannot Keep Us Now Apart for Cupid Offers You My Heart," opens to reveal a standing couple and works by virtue of a paper tab.

According to Robert Reed in Inside Antiques: Mechanical Valentines: Still Moving Memories, by the end of the 19th century, German manufacturers had introduced the mechanical valentine and this is more than likely one of the early results.
