In the 1890s photographers began to add photographic "frames" to enhance their images and set themselves apart in a highly competetive market.
The example shows what looks like a plaster figure of a girl picking fruit from a tree. The framing is copyrighted by F.D. Toby, 1896.
The child in the image has a "hidden mom" lending a helping hand in keeping the head still and upright.
