When I first saw this at our Goodwill I thought "How weird is that thing" So I bought it ! After looking online a bit I've actually seen different version of this green elephant but nothing as large as this one or this exact piece. It's 10" from the trunk to the edge of the basket and 6" high. It's very heavy and has no damage. Someone had to make these but they are all listed as "vintage" 50's. So I'll go with the date but I'd really like to know who made them. Anyone know ? -Mike-

Note: Seen a few described as "majolica" and after a bit more searching I found one like this for sale on Tias .com. They have no ID either . It's selling for $25.00 on sale.

This one was in our store for about a week before I bought it. The planter bowl was filled with rocks. I really thought they wanted too much for it at eight bucks but I loved the bowl part... but the elephant not so much (the eyes are disturbing..lol). I figured it was a one of a kind piece until I saw the other versions online. Me thinks you should have bought your's as well. :)

This one has a mark, but I have no idea what to make of it. It's a deeply incised "N" "Z" maybe even an "S" in the clay. It depends on how you turn it and look at it. It also has number "36" drawn into the red bottom paint.

i think that this is one of those recent pieces from china which are made to look old. you can tell by the sloppy brush work on the base. i bought a couple before i figured it out.
