This seems to be a very popular tradition in rural New England. I don't think an old farmhouse is complete without one of these old bicycles with flowers in planted in their baskets.

I try to "rescue" as many as possible! The one in my garden receives a lavish coating / spraying of W-D 40 every so often as to negate nature's deterioration....trying to at least keeping it in the same condition it was found.
