Winchester images have a strong collector following as do African American images.

This 1890s cabinet card was photographed in Brainerd, Minnesota.

The man holds a M1886 Winchester rifle across his waist. Additionally, on the ground is a cartridge belt (full of rifle cartridges), a hatchet in a sheath and a stag antler handle belt knife. This guy was certainly well armed and equipped.

There is no identification or provenance on the image.

Reproduction of these images in any form is prohibited.

That is one heck of a picture. I wonder if it was posed for or if all that equipment was actually his. If only pictures could talk!

Thanks fhrjr2-- I wish that the image had a name or inscription, so that it was more than just speculation.

I suspect that they are all his "tools of trade", and he chose to wear nicer clothes for the photograph. Of course, the opposite could just as easily be the case: He was a city guy and borrowed the trappings to enhance is photograph.

Either way the volume of weapons/ equipment make this a very desirable 19th century image.

I wonder if he is wearing some kind of a medal or badge on his left vest lapel? Almost looks like a lawman.

Thanks militarist-- unfortunately, there are not enough details visible to make any determination on exactly what it is on his lapel!
