2nd of 2 trunks I purchased at an auction....missing handles, straps, etc. Still has an interior tray(?). The interior tag W.W. Winship does not have a date...just curious as to when these were manufactured?

Blunderbuss2 -- you should be able to make the call by now! Dome top trunk from about 1890 to early 1900's. Great to see a label -- usually there is none and without one there is no way to know who made it, unless it is a speciality high end trunk. Your other trunk is a little older, dome top trunk from about 1880 to 1890. Nice finds --enjoy!

Thank you so much...do these have any value? I have 2 others that I bought at this same auction in the past so I don't need 4 of them in my house, haha. I just find the history so fascinating on these and couldn't pass them up. I will have to post pictures of the other 2 and maybe decide which ones I will actually make room for to keep.

You are welcome! Value depends on type of trunk and market where you live -- the embossed tin trunk has more value than this one pictured, but trunks do not fetch very high prices unless you have a Louis Vuitton or the like. Generally they go for a bit more when they are refinished. Check out your local classifieds to get a good price range. I believe you need at least four in the house (well I am a little trunk biased -- I have lost track on how many I have!!)

I am amazed at the condition of the label. I suppose it is on the inside of the lid. It also looks as though the interior is covered in fabric as opposed to paper. Perhaps I am wrong. Still it all looks in remarkable condition. Makes me wonder how this was used, only once to cross the ocean but never made the trip? Have fun with them, keeping or passing them on.

Yes it is fabric on the interior...it has the tray still too- which I guess is unusual? Do not plan on restoring it but I want to clean it up- what would I use on the outer canvas to get the grime off? I used Murphy's oil soap on the wood and that seems to work well so far...just wanted to brighten it up a bit.

I just use a damp cloth with soapy water.
