So the "SN" stands for Six Nations?

The Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca and Tuscarora nations.

"The Six Nations reserve is bordered by the County of Brant, city of Brantford, Norfolk County, Haldimand County, and the New Credit Indian reserve."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Nations_of_the_Grand_River_First_Nation

Elda "Bun" Smith revived Kahniakehaka (Mohawk) pottery having collected shards of pots that record a 3,000 year old history of ceramics in the area.

On worth point there is reference to the artist's name being "Deyo-nu-nyak-kwak-Ojis-doh". They say :
"After the creation of this listing, I have been advised by an Ebay viewer that the piece was made by a Mohawk woman, related to the Smith family. She was known to have done very detailed work, as this piece has. Her Mohawk name is: Deyo-nu-nyak-kwak-Ojis-doh. My thanks for this information."
    http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/fabulous-signed-six-nations-turtle-indian-pottery

The Smith family connection is important.
"The first concerted effort came from a few dedicated women and men at the Six Nations Reserve in Canada in the late 1960s. The late Elda and Oliver Smith along with Sylvia Smith, Dee Martin, and Karen Williams began to create a form of pottery which became known as Mohawk Pottery. While using an electric wheel and kiln, they produced pots which were Haudenosaunee in design yet modern in function. These artisans developed a brown wash which resembled the colors of the ancient pots and studied the geometric design elements to decorate their pots. In time they also began to use the clay as a canvas, incising into the clay, designs which symbolically represented events in their history or meaningful values such as a tree of peace or clan animal. Others such as Darlene Smith, have now joined this original studio known as Kanyengeh Pottery and a few potters have developed their own style of creating in clay. Kanyengeh Pottery has now closed, but a few potters continue on their own. Today, the son of Elda and Oliver Smith, Steve and his wife Leigh, have a successful studio at Six Nations. Their pots are in many ways their canvas for delicate carvings and incising of images of nature and symbols of the Haudenosaunee."

Their son has a site here:
    http://www.talkingearthpottery.com/ontario_pottery_artists.html

I'd contact him to see if he can fill you in a bit more about Deyo-nu-nyak-kwak-Ojis-doh.

    Her work is wonderful!
    What a revelation, SEAN!

There's a piece on the Smiths here in Crafting Identity: The Development of Professional Fine Craft in Canada:

It seems that there was a group of people trained by Smith. There is mention of twelve people. I've not seen anything about her as yet on the net except for your vase and another so far. I'd ask Steve Smith. Perhaps someone on CW from Canada might be able to fill you in with some more details?

Hey Sean, I'm literally 20 min from the 6 Nations Reserve ,the rez we call it, I grew up and went to school in Caledonia, then Cayuga, and count many first nations people as my friends from my school days. Caledonia is the center of a major land claims dispute with the native Confederacy that's been going on for years, and includes Brantford also. I've never heard of this pottery, but I've only recently developed an appreciation for art pottery in general, so I can offer no help there. Brantford is very close to me also. Funny how it got all the way down to your area! It's a spectacular piece, one I'd be very proud to own. Love it!!

This has been so interesting for me to learn the history of a local piece. The six nations pottery was run by Sylvia Smith, who has become an important figure in her own way, separating herself from her more famous relatives by developing her own style. Here's a link on her.
