What are the big ruffles these boys are wearing? I have a lot of family photos where they are wearing large white ribbons on their arms - which signify either First Communion or Confirmation, but i don't know what these ruffles are for. I'm not sure who they are either, but i found it in a suitcase of old photos while visiting the family in northern New England.

i hope someone can tell me what the ruffles are all about.
They are wearing what's known as a Fauntleroy suit, or a Lord Fauntleroy suit.
This style of boys clothing was influenced by the illustrations in the children's novel Little Lord Fauntleroy written by Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1885 - 1886.
The classic Fauntleroy suit was a velvet cut-away jacket and matching knee pants worn with a fancy blouse with a large lace or ruffled collar.
