Portrait of Madame Recaimier was part of a selection of artworks found in the public galleries of England and the Continent in 1915. Jacques Louis David was a post Revolution French painter. Madame Recamier (the subject of this portrait) was said to "reign supreme" in the intellectual Salon culture which had replaced the French Court. According to the descriptive sheet that comes with this antique print, Madame Recamier "All her contemparies agree that her beauty was divine and her character irreproachable...transporting the beholder as if by magic into the region of poetry"!
