A nice, well-worn Japanese ivory netsuke from the late Edo period (i.e., early 19th century) featuring a Shishi (or Foo Dog, to some) climbing up a ball, which likely represents the "pearl of wisdom." Dimensions: 1.25"(H) x 1"(W) x 0.75" (T).
Harder and harder to find these days, but if one keeps a critical eye out for them early Japanese netsuke can still be found. Importantly, only buy early pieces (pre-20th century), in part, because they are the ones that maintain their historical and collector value and were actually worn, but most importantly because you won't run afoul of UNESCO import/export restrictions on ivory.
