Here are some old photographs I found within the Peck estate in Lewistown, Pennsylvania this past winter. Written on the rear of the photos reads, "Anna at store picnic" and from many old McMeens of Lewistown department store memorabilia found within the estate I would say that is the store they all worked for. I found everything from service awards to unused Whiting and Davis metal mesh clutch handbags with the original tags in original McMeens branded boxes. Although when I ask most locals they never heard of the store, so it may have been defunct for many years. I would best date this photograph to the 1920's from the bus, which appears to be the old Lewistown and Bellefonte line. I found the bus line mentioned on page 67 in the book, "A Railroad Family in the early 1920's" by Carole Bank Robbins.
Lewistown, Pennsylvania has many beautiful old Victorian homes and was once a thriving economy with many factories and stores that have all been closed, and is best described as a Walmart economy now, with a high unemployment rate, and many homes in disrepair. I recently purchased a investment property that is a large all beige brick three story Victorian with beautiful stained glass windows, slate sided third floor, claw footed tubs and all the original features. Located on Market street which is the main business district, and has a store front on the first floor that I would love to restore to it's former glory. I would also like to display my historical findings once completed for the locals to follow suit and join in the renaissance of this community.

Probably didn't talk to the right locals.....it was a very nice store and the "redevelopment phase" in Lewistown was part of it's demise....I have a couple of pics if I could get them to you some how.....love keeping history alive
