I stopped at a business that did estate clean outs looking for a deal on sports memorabilia. I noticed an old Faust (Goethe) and Hawthorne (Scarlet Letter) in great condition but was side tracked by an older looking book (leather bound). I asked them owner how much for the card collection and he said $25. Of course I countered $20 and if you throw in all the 2 books for $24 I'd take them off his hands. He said sure. Then I asked about the photo album and he said I could have it for free. I started browsing through the album and noticed the 1st pics were tin types and towards the end their was a pic of a little boy age 10-12 yrs old. Then on the last page was a table of contents( Aunt Rachel Lisk, Uncle Wyckoff, Uncle Ferd, daughter Stella. Uncle Abe, Geo. Gullock+ Aunt Emma +Aunt Mag. Aunt Blonnie. Aunt Jane, Uncle Willi wife and son Harvey, Johanna Huff, Katie Burton and Carrie Burton. Geo Swarer, Aunt Blonnie + friend,Uncle David ,Aunt Magie Agans, Jakie, Mother, Johanna Huff, Lizzie Thorn, Capt Joe Van Fleet, UNCLE GEORGE MARSHALL (Nobel Peace Prize winner), Uncle Lou Marshall, David Thorn + Lizzie). I knew the name was familiar being that I am a World War 2 nut and heard different stories from my Grandfather-in-law. I tried looking up surviving relatives (Kitty Winn-step granddaughter/actress) to piece all of this together but came to a dead end everytime. I contacted the Marshall foundation to see if I could donate such a great piece and to no avail another dead end.

I've been working on the family tree that has Lisk on my father's side and Wyckoff as ancestrors on my mother's side. And how the last name Lisk is now a first name in the Wyckoff family. The head of the Wycoff society is E Lisk Wycoff. This might be his direct ancestors.

Hi Karen, Thanks for the info. Are you located on the east coast? If so let me know asap. I didn't receive an email alert about your post and that's why I haven't responded. Is there any connection to the Marshall family? (That's my biggest question) but I would more than let you take a look at the album. My # 302-463-3331

Have you been able to confirm it is THE George Marshall?

What is the backmark (city/ state) for that particular photo? Is it one of the posted photographs?

I have been in touch with the Marshall Foundation and VMI archives department. They haven't been able to produce a pic of him at this age. Most of the pics starting with the tintypes were taken in Philadelphia and Flemington N.J. The one of Marshall was Flemington. I have had the album dated starting in the 1860's and the last few were roughly taken right before the turn of the century. Marshall was born in 1880 which is right around the age of the picture in question. He has worn the same part and facial expressions since he was born til he passed away. Do you know of any facial recognition (Mid Atlantic) experts?

I have the photo of him and his siblings. I have second guessed this over and over. If you take the photo of him that I own and the ones on the web site there are distinct similarities. Starting with the Part in his hair, His Brow, the strong contrast from his nose and lips. then the ears. I have been working on this for numerous years and I cant find another pic of him at this age. I started to look up Lou Marshall and will dig even more. If you know anyone that might know or heard of a Lou that would be greatly appreciated. My next lead is of the Wyckoffs and the tie in to the different families. Back when these albums were assembled and they started taking pics they would send them to friends and family. Im located in the Mid-Atlantic area and am willing to drive within 100-150 miles on my day off to gather more info. All I can ask is yours and anyone else who would like to help solve this puzzle. Thank you.

I would check out the Flemington NJ connection. Where was Marshall born-- where did he live as a youth. Your George Marshall lived (most likely) in Flemington. If THE George Marshall lived elsewhere it is another thing that doesn't fit (along with the brother's name) and must be explained.

I never look at a photographic ID as a preponderance of evidence (51% vs. 49%), I look at it as "without a shadow of doubt". If anything doesn't fit, then the attribution is questionable.

I have researched, collected, and sold antique photographs for over 20 years.

Good luck. I hope that you have found THE George C. Marshall.

I have all of his bio...Uniontown is about 240 miles west of Flemington. Distance between Phil and Flemington less than 40. I've been very thorough ....I've been talking to the archives of both Vmi and the Marshall foundation. Is it possible that Lou isnt his brother or it might be a cousin. There are 1000 questions to be answered. I am almost certain this is the George Marshall in question.

Another tie in is Capt Joe Van Fleet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Van_Fleet. He's listed in the album to with connections to George Marshall
  12. Bameebrown, 3 years ago
Im not sure if there is any relation or not..Joe /James
  13. Bameebrown, 3 years ago
I understand that ....Im trying to link or figure out the relation ..Lisk...Wyckoff....Van Fleet....Marshall.....Im not saying this was his own personal album. Might it be a relatives/friends ...maybe the Joe Van Fleet (erroneously confused Van Fleet with a well-known alcoholic officer with a similar name.) was that other officer and not James Van Fleet. There are a ton of questions to be answered. All that I'm asking with this wall are those that might have knowledge of 1 of the stated family names to help piece this puzzle together. To prove a theory, one must research and try to proof it.

What do you have that reinforces the ID beside the name on the album?
