They say the time to buy something out of the ordinary is when you see it.
I walk out of an estate sale seeing this on the shelf .....turned around and went back in and bought it for $40. I haven't seen another one quite like this one. It only stands for inches tall and 2 inches wide. It's a simple cut glass jar with ridges. However the silver lid that covers the top is domed with a beaded lip. The scene on the lid looks like the grim reaper. There is a cherub at the top. Ther is a serpent on the bottom. On each side are two females one holding grapes one holding wheat, one looks like Lady liberty , and lady Justice. Any ideas on the Pattern ? I found another jar dated 1880-1895 but not the lid.
He looks more like Bacchus celebrating with the spoils of his day's conquest. The Grim Reaper would be depicted in a more "Grim" setting and allure. I would have paid the $40.00 you paid for this Victorian Vanity Jar. Are there any hallmarks? RER (BOB)
Could not find ant hallmarks on the lid.
I don't know - would Bacchus have an hour glass on his knee; and what looks everso like horns on his head?
He doesn't look like he's just had his fill of fine wine either. I do see some grapes on your lid, but not too many. I've seen pics of Bacchus with grapes all over his head.
I don't know why 'they' would depict the grim reaper on the lid of your jar - perhaps it's to warn you of the ages to come, and the wrinkles that will come with the ages, so you'd better use the emollient in the jar.
If you have one, use a magnifying glass to look in all places on your lid.
