Is that really hide or could it be alligator-stamped metal? There is a recent post that claimed first one and then the other. If it is not hide is anyone aware if trunks were ever covered in alligator/crock hide?

Oddly enough I have found a second trunk ...exactly the same....just smaller.
I did refurbish the original and it is alligator patterned tin not hide. The second one is the same. You can tell in areas where it is worn and the edge is open and bent.

I have one just like it. It has a divided tray, There is one on EBAY like this-seller says it came from Germany.
      It is 33 3/4(l) x 22 1/2(h) x 18 1/2(w)
