This is not a killer pick just something I found while digging in my grandmothers back yard. Her home was build in 1911 but this item was pattened in 1898. I couldn't get a good picture of it saying that but you will have to trust me.
Any ideas what this is?

You have a Western Electric hookwitch for a early antique wall telephone.
It's seems to me to be too long to be a switch hook for a phone. http://www.oldphoneman.com/CollectCandlestick.htm
If thats a select-a-size paper towel it's sitting on then the item is around 8" long.
