      Watercolour sketching?
    2. Stillwater Stillwater, 11 years ago
Interesting guess, what has me confused is the Hosue of Baldwin logo. Its a colonial American mansion. I was thinking maybe there was a restaraunt there or something and that this was used to take orders? I don't know, still doing research

      Thanks for the love V

The medallion is from a Baldwin Piano.

Ohhhh so maybe this is like some kind of sheet music holder or something?
    5. DrFluffy DrFluffy, 11 years ago
It's so cool and unique... I love it.

Did you notice how the clip on the back is upside down? Read music and clip other music on back?
Or...it's industrial and the weird clamp thing on the top is for a calculator....had to. Let my geek out there...
Maybe an engineer at the Baldwin piano factory?
    7. Stillwater Stillwater, 11 years ago
Yeah, I haven't the slightest guess on this one...

This is better than any puzzle you can buy,lol

I'll guess at it.... Maybe a factory inspector clipboard. The odd shapes may be the shape of a certain part? Or maybe the set up man's for setting up the machines?

      Sure is cool!

Just wondering about the device at top right. At first I thought it might support some cup for water (for the watercolours?). The fact that the medallion comes from a piano is interesting too as is the enamelled "Anke" a Germanic name.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anke

What about that metal device on the back?
      Is it a hook?

The board has curved edges but so thoroughly different from the normal rectangular form
    10. Stillwater Stillwater, 11 years ago
The Anke was actually carved into it, fairly amateurly too, so I don't know if this board started its like with that on it. The thing on the back is a clip that looks like its for holding papers or something.

Its weird though that the curved edges don't really fit comfortably in the crook of your arm.

This thing has some highly specialized function I am guessing. Haven't seen anything like it on Google yet

TubeAmp, I see that there are Baldwin pianos, but the "House" of Baldwin? Are you sure that is from a Baldwin piano?
    13. AzTom AzTom, 11 years ago
More to think about. Baldwin started selling Decker pianos in 1862 as HD Baldwin, the beginning of "The House of Baldwin" but didn't start making Baldwin pianos until 1891.

I still have the same brass tag from a piano I scrapped about 15 years ago.
    15. Stillwater Stillwater, 11 years ago
Thanks guys, you're helping me fill in the puzzle here. So it deffinitely IS piano related and it is no earlier than 1891

I think its going to be one of these thing where I'm randomly Googling stuff and stumble across another one

Thanks so much to everyone for their helpful comments
    16. AzTom AzTom, 11 years ago
I hope you find out someday. If the clip is original its not older than 1905. I did find the phrase "The House of Baldwin" in a Baldwin catalog.

Cincinnati, Ohio-based Globe Files Company was formed in Cincinnati in 1882. The original purpose of the Globe Files Company was to manufacture file cabinets and other office equipment. Two years after the company was formed its first catalogue was released. As business expanded into diverse areas the company's name was changed to the Globe Company. In 1890, the Michigan-based Wernicke Company, also an office supply company, was acquired. The company became Globe Wernicke.

Just a guess, could the thing on the top right hold a stop watch, or some sort of timing device?
    21. Stillwater Stillwater, 11 years ago
I don't think they had stopwatches when this thing was in use, but I as well was thinking that it might have held some sort of "piano-related" device for tuning or timing

The clip on the back is strange to me... I'm having a hard time picturing how it would be employed
