Hi lundy, this is an apochryphal Ming Dynasty, Zhengde Reign (1506 - 1521) mark on a modern bowl. Regards, Jim

I've taken many art classes through the years and have found and appreciation for the amount of time that can go into pottery and porcelain pieces. I had absolutely no talent for throwing pots, they always turned out a lumpy mess. I think that's why I've always loved collecting them. Beautiful find lundy, its hard to find well made porcelain around here. I've only found one and some people tell me its Japanese, but a Japanese friend of mine tells me its Chinese. Maybe Jim could swing by my page and help me out?:)

Hi Sarah, I presume you are referring to the Asian covered porcelain jar posted a month ago. Apparently you edited the fourth photo after vertaio’s comment since the orientation is now correct. The piece is Japanese (with apologies to your Japanese friend). With regard to your last question, simplicity is frequently, but not necessarily, the hallmark of quality porcelain. I think it was an excellent find. Best wishes, Jim

Hi lundy, your mark should be rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Then go here:

    http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=nyp.33433072168010;view=1up;seq=153

You should be on page 135. About the middle of the page find Cheng Te (old spelling for Zhendge). On the left is the six character mark for the reign, It reads top down and right to left: Great Ming Cheng Te Period Make. Your four character mark has omitted ‘Period Make’. Regards, Jim
