Late 1880s cabinet card image depicting a Bronze Sculpture of "The Wrestlers".
The photograph was taken by Rosch out of ST Louis, Missouri.
The sculpture has a sign, but it is too light to read the full inscription.
Any information on this sculpture or the artist is greatly appreciated.

Yes, it is very light but that is what I see.

I wouldn't think it was a trophy eye.
I think that it is just an artistic representation of Wrestlers. I would think that the artist used two models (one standing, the other lying down) and then just "combined" the two into what he saw as a dramatic action scene. It dates from about 1880s and I think folks of the era (with limited action photography/ not movies or tv) would have been less critical of what our modern eyes see as an unrealistic pose.

It is an unusual subject matter. That is why I purchased it.
There are several reasons for taking a photo of artwork-- documentation of an exhibition, ability to show or sell a large piece (catalog). I don't know the why on this particular image.

You just identified what makes antique images so interesting! Often the "story" behind the pose is lost with time and leaves us all with nothing but speculation.
In this example, the label with "The Wrestlers" gives a good start point.
I do not know the WHO or WHERE of the sculpture and was hoping that someone on here might recognize this particular bronze or similar works by the artist.
ST Louis is most likely the location of the artist or the exhibition.

It is what makes all of these items so special-- that individual spark or memory that it sets off.
