About American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins

The U.S. Mint's American Buffalo Gold Coin program, which began production in 2006, was a 24-carat gold bullion coin program (with proof sets for collectors) paying homage to the design of James Earle Fraser's buffalo nickel.

The American Buffalo gold coins have a legal tender (face) value of $50, but they were originally marketed by the mint at $800 (reflecting the value of the gold content, which has since fluctuated with market conditions). The coins' obverse shows a Native American, and the reverse depicts a bison (buffalo) standing atop a mound of dirt.
