About Collectible US Early Half Dollar Coins

The first half dollar coins, known as "flowing hair Liberty" coins, featured the bust of Lady Liberty with flowing hair and a circle of stars on one side, and a skinny eagle with a wreath on the reverse. This design only lasted for one year before being replaced by the "draped bust" design. This lasted until 1807, when Liberty was pictured with a cap and her bust was turned to face the opposite direction (left). The eagle was depicted more realistically, and "50C" was added to note the denomination.

Production increased with this design, so half dollar coins struck between 1807 and 1839 are easy to find and often in decent condition. However, collectors should note that early half dollar counterfeits are relatively common.
