About US Walking Liberty Half Dollar Coins

Walking Liberty half dollar coins, first struck in 1916, featured a design by Adolph Weinman, who also designed the Mercury Head dime (which was also released in 1916). The Walking Liberty coin depicts Lady Liberty with an American flag draped around her body, walking towards a sun with rays; the reverse features an eagle perched on a rock.

Although the this coin was replaced in 1947 by the Franklin half dollar, the design was so loved that it was reused for the American Silver Eagle bullion coin in 1986 and continues to be in use today.
