Grendel67, it does look like a piece of bamboo, now that you mention it. I guess all the various colors staining the interior base, must be dyes and not candle wax like I peeled from the edges.
Thank you all for your assistance in identifying this vase. I had considered it as an early Satsuma piece by an unknown artist. grendel67, thank you for the detailed identification.
