This wood box was bought simply because it is so darned charming. No other reason. ok great price too.... The calligraphy (am I using the word correctly?) in great order, iron straps for the corner on such a small thing, shaved corners that are dovetailed. All those things were more than enough to buy this box. I have to admit though that I am not sure if it is of chinese or japanese origin. I believe it is chinese, but that is a guess. Another guess is the use which I believe was for rice. I am just not sure if it were for rice what the divider was for. The box is not large at all measuring only 4"h x 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" top and 4 3/8" x 4/38".
I would love to know what the caligraphy on each side reads. How old approximately, and if not for rice what its original use was. I hate to say that it is used as a scrap paper holder and paper clips. I don't want to use it much as I would hate to cause it any damage. Ink pens are out of the question. As a lover of wood boxes this was a no brainer.
    Thanks.

I love wood boxes too...and I love this! I would have to think that a close look at the hardware could lead you in the right direction. Could you add a close up of the nails/tacks?

BH, they are hand cut. some are really thin while the majority are pretty uniform. Round nails, but there is a nail on 2 sides near the bottom which I have no clue as to its purpose. You can see them in the dovetail pic i am posting. There is a larger one on the left side and a smaller one to the right. Likely early 20th century is my guess.
      Thanks
